History Talking.com Cricket Writer's
Award
In the last six months History Talking.com, an online
history of the South Asian Diasporas, has emerged as a
respectable voice of the South Asian communities around the
world. The website www.historytalkign.com was set up in June
2003 by the broadcast journalist and the former BBC radio
editor Vijay Rana. It is regularly getting an average of
more than 160,000 hits per month with a peak of 210,000 hits
so far this month.
History Talking.com has now launched a new initiative to
promote excellence in cricket writing. The website has set
up three awards for new and so far unpublished cricket
writers. The first prize will be of Indian Rs 25,000 and the
second and third prizes will be of Rs 10,000 and Rs. 5,000.
For those living outside India the prize money will be given
in the US dollars.
Participants will have to write articles on the current
India-Pakistan cricket series in not more than 500 words.
They can write on any aspect of the game, players profile or
public mood. The deadline for the entries is 19th April
2004. The entries could be emailed to editor@historytalking.com
At the end of the series a panel of senior cricket
journalists will judge and select the best entries and the
award winners will be announced on the website on the 1st
May. Some of the entries will be published on
www.historytalking.com.
Gistory Talking.com Cricket Writer's Award is sponsored
by the UK's Halifax University Birmingham Campus. The
university specialises in the study of business management,
marketing and information technology and is popular among
students coming from South Asia. "Many of our South
Asian students have keen interest in the current series
between India and Pakistan and we hope that this award will
promote writing skills among our students in the UKand also
in India and Pakistan. That's why we are sponsoring
it," says Greg Turton, the Registrar of the
HalifaxUniversity.
